Background Hemangiomas are a relatively common type of tumor in humans and animals. Various subtypes of hemangiomas have been described in the literature. The classification methods for hemangiomas differ between human and veterinary medicine, and the basis for tumor classification can be found in the literature. Case presentation This study describes a tumor in the subcutaneous tissue of the right dorsum of an artificially rescued juvenile Chinese pangolin. Computed tomography (CT) examination yielded the preliminary diagnosis of a vascular malformation, and surgery was performed to resect the tumor. Histopathological examination showed that the tumor mainly was consisted of adipose tissue, capillaries, and spindle cells in the fibrous stroma. Immunohistochemistry showed the positive expression of CD31, CD34, α-SMA, GLUT1 and WT-1 in the tumor tissue, and the tumor was eventually diagnosed as an infantile haemangioma. Conclusion The final diagnosis of infantile hemangioma was depended on the histopathological immunohistochemical and CT examination of the neoplastic tissue. This is the first report of infantile hemangioma in a critically endangered species Chinese pangolin.

Caohai Lake, hailed as a gem on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, is currently being faced with serious biological invasion threats. Among the most influential invasive species, the Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) is causing various adverse effects on the lake’s ecosystem. However, there has been little attention paid to this issue for a long time. In light of this, this study conducted a sample collection in August 2022 to investigate the total length–weight relationships (LWRs) and condition factors (K) of the target species with the aim of providing fundamental data for the upcoming ecological restoration in Caohai Lake. The results are as follows: (1) P. clarkii was distributed throughout the lake, with females exhibiting larger body sizes than males; (2) the LWRs were expressed as: W♂ = 2 × 10−6 TL3.66 (R2 = 0.90 and n = 227); W♀ = 4 × 10−6 TL3.39 (R2 = 0.95 and n = 259), both showing positive allometric growth pattern and indicating, the weight gain rate of males is significantly faster than that of females during the growth period; (3) the K was 0.27 ± 0.04%, indicating robustness in P. clarkii in the lake. These findings underscore that urgent scientific measures should be taken to handle the rapid invasion of P. clarkii in Caohai Lake.

Chemical composition of muscle tissue of fish reared in the aquaculture of South Vietnam

To study the chemical composition of four species of valuable fish reared in aquaculture conditions in South Vietnam.Individuals of Channa striata, Channa gachua, Oreochromis niloticus, a hybrid of Clarias gariepinus and Clarias macrocephalus were purchased in markets from farmers of cage farms and directly in the farms of Khanh Hoa province. The fish were measured, weighed, and then muscle tissue was dissected for chemical analysis. The water content in the tissue was determined by a two‐stage method for determining moisture, while lipids were determined by the fat‐free residue method in a Soxhlet apparatus. The amount of protein was obtained according to the principle of the Kjeldahl method, using a semi‐automatic distillation unit UDK 139 (Velp Scientifica, Italy, 2011); minerals were determined by the gravimetric method, and carbohydrates – by calculation. The index of physiological state was calculated according to the standard method.Hybrid catfish muscles are characterised as having the greatest nutritional value. In terms of lipid content, the individuals studied belonged to fish with a low fat content, Channa striata, which belongs to the category of lean fish. A high index of physiological state in Oreochromis niloticus was found to be associated with increased water content in muscle tissue. No significant differences were found between the biochemical parameters in the muscles of fish with an increase in body size, and only in Channa striata did the proportion of minerals increase. The data obtained can be used in the organisation of rational feeding and maintenance of aquacultural species.
