Mortality risk in chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Aims This study aimed to estimate the annual mortality risk and its determinants in chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy. Methods and results We conducted a systematic search in MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, Embase, Cochrane Library, and LILACS. Longitudinal studies published between 1 January 1946 and 24 October 2018 were included. A random‐effects meta‐analysis using the death rate over the mean follow‐up period in years was used to obtain pooled estimated annual mortality rates. Main outcomes were defin… Show more

“…Although both CCC and IDC are cardiomyopathies associated with high morbidity and mortality, CCC has been associated with a worse prognosis (3,18,(42)(43)(44). While these cardiomyopathies are clinically indistinguishable, the worse prognosis observed in CCC suggests that distinct pathogenic mechanisms may be involved in the progression of these diseases.…”

“…Regarding Chagas disease, multimodality imaging is a crucial tool for comprehensive management of individuals with advanced-stage cardiopathy 5 . However, the ECG remains fundamental for the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of this disease 1 - 3 , 6 - 10 . Furthermore, its simple and rapid acquisition allows tracings to be obtained by non-medical personnel trained in this task, making it the ideal method for screening a large number of individuals , especially those with difficulties accessing complex healthcare systems, even in suburban and rural areas 1 - 3 .…”

“…Providing interventions that can prevent Chronic Chagas Cardiomyopathy (CCC), a disease with an annual mortality rate of 7.9%, to existing infected populations is also a moral imperative [15]. Such interventions have improved patients' quality of life [16][17][18]. At present, there are only two nitroimidazole derivatives, BZN and nifurtimox, both of which have similar efficacy, adverse effects (AEs) and cost characteristics [19].…”
