Mortality study of British pathologists

Abstract: Pathologists eligible for inclusion in the study were identified from the membership lists of the Royal College of Pathologists from 1974 to 1987, establishing a population of 4,512 members. Overall mortality was lower among the study group compared with the general population of England and Wales, although there were significantly more deaths due to suicide (observed 13, expected 4.9, SMR 265, 95% CI 141-454). Excess deaths due to cancer of the lymphatic and hemopoietic system were noted but they were not sig… Show more

“…The fact that an association was also not observed among subgroups defined by sex, smoking level, or histological subtype further supports formaldehyde not being associated with lung cancer risk. Our null results among women are consistent with those reported in the only three studies presenting results separately for women (13,16,20), among which there was no evidence of an association. To our knowledge, our female case series represents the largest used to study formaldehyde to date and the one with the greatest proportion of exposed women (35.5%).…”

“…However, these errors significant (6,9), one among women only (13). In two smaller cohorts of health professionals, statistically significant inverse associations (standardized mortality ratios) were reported (8,16). Both studies included few exposed cases and used information from professional associations to assign formaldehyde exposure according to health profession.…”

“…Cohorts of such workers have been studied in the United States (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8), in the United Kingdom (9)(10)(11)(12), Sweden (l3), Italy (14), and Ireland (15). The most recent studies show that the overall mortality caused by cancer among these workers is lower than among the general population.…”

“…Cardiovascular death was chosen because of the established link between work-related stress and death from cardiovascular causes. 5,18,20,21 Brain neoplasm was chosen because of its implication in excess mortality in pathologists, 17 its link with viral infection, 25 and anecdotal reports of patient-tosurgeon transmission of malignant tumor. 15 Leukemia and other hematopoietic neoplasms were chosen because of the frequent use of fluoroscopy in the operating room and the increased incidence of these neoplasms in radiologists during the early 20th century.…”
