Mosquito Larvicidal Constituents from the Ethanol Extract ofInula racemosaHook. f. Roots againstAedes albopictus

Abstract: The aim of this research was to determine larvicidal activity of the ethanol extract ofInula racemosaHook. f. (Compositae) roots against the larvae of the Culicidae mosquitoAedes albopictusand to isolate any larvicidal constituents from the extract. Based on bioactivity-guided fractionation, 11,13-dihydroisoalantolactone (1), macrophyllilactone E (2), 5α-epoxyalantolactone (3), and epoxyisoalantolactone (4) were isolated and identified as the active constituents. Compounds1and2exhibited strong larvicidal activ… Show more

“…In addition, six relevant lactones 3,4-dehydroalantolactone (3), 5 ,6 -epoxyalantolactone (4), 6-hydroxyl alantolactone (5), 4-hydroxymethyl isolalantolactone (6), 11-carboxyl alantolactone (7), and 11-carboxyl alantolactone (8) were obtained. Their structures were confirmed by MS and NMR determination [14][15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…Studies of the essential oils and extracts derived from such plants as Clinopodium gracile [4], Saussurea lappa [5], Toddalia asiatica [6], Inula racemosa [7], Isodon japonicus var. glaucocalyx [8], and many other plants have demonstrated promising larvicidal activities against mosquito vectors.…”

“…Fortunately, natural products derived from plants including essential oils can provide an alternate to synthetic chemical insecticides [2]. Many essential oils and their constituents can exert toxic activity against mosquito species [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. During the present author's mass screening program for new agrochemicals from wild plants, the essential oil of Salvia plebeian R.Br.…”
