Mosquitocidal, Antimalarial and Antidiabetic Potential of Musa paradisiaca-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles: In Vivo and In Vitro Approaches

Abstract: The development of pathogens and parasites resistant to synthetic drugs has created the need for developing alternative approaches to fight vector-borne diseases. In this research, we fabricated green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using Musa paradisiaca stem extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. AgNP showed plasmon resonance reduction under UV-Vis spectrophotometry, SEM and XRD highlighted that they were crystalline in nature with face centered cubic geometry. . AgNP showed growth inhibition a… Show more

“…A remarkable increase in insulin levels as well as a decrease in blood sugar and HbA1c was observed in the STZ-induced diabetic rats treated with AgNPs. Increase in glucose uptake and the induction of insulin secretion are the possible mechanisms responsible for these observations (Anbazhagan et al, 2017).…”

“…Similarly, Allium cepa extract-AgNPs were synthesized and tested in vitro; the results showed significant inhibition of carbohydrate digestive enzymes (α-glucosidase and α-amylase) comparable to acarbose and free radical-scavenging ability (Jini and Sharmila, 2020). In vivo studies of Musa paradisiaca stem extract-mediated synthesized silver nanoparticles on diabetic rats have also shown suitable antidiabetic effects by decreasing the levels of blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin [ 249 ]. Similar effects have been reported using Solanum nigrum leaf extract-AgNPs [ 250 ] and Zingiber officinales extract-AgNPs [ 251 ].…”

“…11 Green synthesized-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Musa paradisiaca stem extract were also a potent drug against diabetes in the streptozotocin (STZ)induced diabetes rat model. 12 In another study, AgNPs using ethanolic extract of ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) had a notable effect on blood glucose lowering in rats with STZ-induced diabetes. 13 The biosynthesis of AgNPs is a promising alternative to physicochemical methods, which limit the use of hazardous and toxic substances and are energy consuming.…”
