Most common robotic bariatric procedures: review and technical aspects

Abstract: Since its appear in the year 1997, when Drs. Cadiere and Himpens did the first robotic cholecystectomy in Brussels, not long after the first cholecystectomy, they performed the first robotic bariatric procedure. It is believed that robotically-assisted surgery’s most notable contributions are reflected in its ability to extend the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to procedures not routinely performed using minimal access techniques. We describe the 3 most common bariatric procedures done by robot. The m… Show more

“…Initially, bariatric 21 and cardiothoracic surgery were the two specialties that embraced robotic surgery with great enthusiasm. However, other forms of minimal access surgery have proven to be just as effective (and cheaper and easier) in most cases, such that robotic procedures are the minority in these specialties now.…”

“…Of course, the relevance of the robotic approach has been exposed in the unusually complex arena of bariatric surgery revisions, where the experts have been able to achieve results with more advanced dexterity and with a more ergonomically feasible method, with excellent visibility and with the advantage offered by the ability to control three arms and the endoscope simultaneously [63,64].…”

“…The first documented case of robotic bariatric surgery took place in 1998 when Drs. Cadiere and Himpens in Belgium performed a robotic-assisted laparoscopic gastric banding [ 1 , 2 ]. Since that time, the robotic surgical system has undergone several iterations of innovation in regards to the surgical platform’s functionality and efficiency [ 3 ].…”
