Motor and bladder dysfunctions in patients with vertebral fractures at the thoracolumbar junction

Abstract: Half of the patients had epiconus lesion following thoracolumbar junction fracture, and they had a clinical presentation of flaccid legs and spastic NBD. Patients with L2 fracture had higher LEMS than patients with T11, T12, and L1 fracture. Patients whose LEMS was higher than 20 could all walk functionally. Fracture at the thoracolumbar junction may cause spastic, flaccid, or mixed type NBD, and urodynamic study is an essential tool for the correct diagnosis and management. Ankle spasticity has a high positiv… Show more

“…Data on the prevalence of bladder/bowel incontinence and sexual dysfunction among individuals with traumatic TLSCI in the community is scarce as most studies include both traumatic and non-traumatic TLSCI. 11,[15][16][17][29][30][31] While the prevalence of selfreported bladder/bowel incontinence and sexual dysfunction from our study fits within the range of published literature, a direct comparison is difficult as the definition of dysfunctions, measures used, participant Note that P values below the threshold of statistical significance (P < 0.05) have been bolded. populations and follow-up times vary.…”

“…Data were presented as the mean ± s.d. Student's t-test was used for continuous or discrete data analysis, as described [20,23]. All statistical tests were two-sided (SEM), and values of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant (*p < 0.05; ** p < 0.01; *** p < 0.001).…”

“…Chen et al. examined 52 patients with vertebral fracture at thoracolumbar junction (T11-T12-L1-L2); spastic neurogenic bladder dysfunction was most seen at T11, T12 lesion, flaccid neurogenic bladder dysfunction was most seen at L2 level [20]. The conus medullaris, the terminal segment of the adult spinal cord, usually lies at L1 vertebra of most adults.…”
