Mouse‐Protective Antibodies Against The Ibc Proteins of Group B Streptococci

Abstract: Antiserum to each of the α and β antigens of the Ibc protein fraction of group B streptococci was raised in rabbits. A possible protective effect of the antisera in mice challenged by group B streptococci was evaluated. Antiserum against each of the antigens significantly increased the survival rates of mice challenged by bacteria which produced the corresponding antigen, but not of those challenged by bacteria which produced only the heterologous antigen. Animals challenged with a strain which produced both o… Show more

“…In 1975, Rebecca Lancefield first demonstrated that immunization of rabbits with C protein containing GBS strains elicited antibodies that provided passive protection against lethal challenge in mice with strains containing this protein [21]. Investigators later determined that the C protein was comprised of α and β components and found that rabbit antibodies to either component of C protein conferred passive protection in mice [22]. In the 1990's, a monoclonal antibody to α C protein was described that induced opsonic killing of GBS and protected mice from lethal challenge with GBS [23].…”

“…In addition to the CPS, proteins are also present on the surfaces of GBS cells, and studies have shown that antibodies against both CPS and surface proteins are protective against GBS infection (67)(68)(69). The alpha-like protein (Alp) family proteins are among the well-characterized GBS surface proteins and are significant virulence factors.…”

“…However, in a mouse model, protection by antibodies to the Ibc protein antigens was demonstrated (14). Recent results in this laboratory have substantiated that antibodies to each of the a and p antigens are protective in an experimental model (8).…”
