MPGD-based photon detectors for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1 and beyond

Abstract: After pioneering gaseous detectors of single photon for RICH applications using CsI solid state photocathodes in MWPCs within the RD26 collaboration and by the constructions for the RICH detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS, in 2016 we have upgraded COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four novel photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5 m 2 have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS ph… Show more

“…The last generation of MPGDs exploits modern photolithography technology on flexible and rigid supports. As an example, GEM and MicroMegas are successfully operated in COMPASS [23][24][25], LHCb and TOTEM [26] experiments at CERN, in KLOE [27] at Frascati-INFN, and are being built for the upgrades of the ATLAS [28,29] and CMS [30,31] experiments at LHC.…”

“…In parallel, an extensive R&D program [3] aimed to develop MPGD-based large area PDs established a novel hybrid technology combining Micromegas [4] and THick Gas Electron Multipliers (THGEMs) [5]. In 2016 COMPASS RICH-1 was upgraded by replacing four of the remaining 12 MWPCs with new detectors based on the novel hybrid MPGD technology [6]. The new detectors have been successfully commissioned and operated during the 2016 and 2017 COMPASS data taking periods.…”

“…For the detection of single photon in Cherenkov imaging counters, the MicroPattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD)-based Photon Detectors (PD) have recently been demonstrated as effective devices [3]. These detectors have a hybrid structure, where two layers of THGEMs are followed by a MICROMEGAS stage; the top layer of the first THGEM is coated with CsI, which acts as a reflective PC.…”
