MR Elastography in Cancer

Abstract: The mechanical traits of cancer include abnormally high solid stress as well as drastic and spatially heterogeneous changes in intrinsic mechanical tissue properties. Whereas solid stress elicits mechanosensory signals promoting tumor progression, mechanical heterogeneity is conducive to cell unjamming and metastatic spread. This reductionist view of tumorigenesis and malignant transformation provides a generalized framework for understanding the physical principles of tumor aggressiveness and harnessing them … Show more

“…As tomoelastography is still an emerging field, there is limited data available on tumors in general (see also ref. [49]), and especially when considering tissue fluidity . Therefore, the underlying principles of tumor mechanics were approached agnostically and the data sets were analyzed from all available in vivo tomoelastography studies on solid tumors that included stiffness and fluidity maps of both tumors and respective control tissue.…”

“…Longitudinal (over time) or local (over space) differences in tissue stiffness might add to the growing knowledge of pancreatic disease pathophysiology. Specifically, MRE research to date has mainly focused on large organs, such as the liver and brain 8 . Assessment of the pancreas with MRE remains challenging due to its small size, elongated shape, and central abdominal location.…”

“…Specifically, MRE research to date has mainly focused on large organs, such as the liver and brain. 8 Assessment of the pancreas with MRE remains challenging due to its small size, elongated shape, and central abdominal location. Shear wave quality is paramount to obtaining reliable results regarding biomechanics, which rely on the analysis and reconstruction of the propagation of shear waves into and through the pancreas.…”

“…M R elastography (MRE) can be used to noninvasively measure viscoelastic properties, assessing the stiffness of biological soft tissues in vivo. 1,2 This technique can visualize the propagation of shear waves through soft tissue, such as in the pancreas for pancreatic cancer. 1 Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common type of pancreatic cancer, 3 with a 5-year overall survival rate of 11%.…”
