“…This contrasts previous findings for this species (Murashita et al, 2009a), providing novel insights that may revise the current knowledge on orexigenic and anorexigenic factors in salmon. Our data are in agreement with the suggested AgRP orexigenic role for other vertebrates including several fish species, such as goldfish (Cerda-Reverter and Peter, 2003), zebrafish (Song et al, 2003;Jeong et al, 2018;Shainer et al, 2019), seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) (Agulleiro et al, 2014), Ya fish (Schizothorax prenanti) (Wei et al, 2013), arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) (Striberny et al, 2015), and coho salmon (Kim et al, 2015). The discrepancies observed between the results obtained in the present study and the previous studies from Valen et al (2011), which indicated that agrp1 have an anorexigenic role, are most likely a result from hypothalamus versus whole brain analysis.…”

“…One hypothesis is that reduced anatomical constraints from eye-loss allow for hypothalamic expansion. A number of hypothalamic neuropeptides are known to be upregulated in cavefish including HCRT and NPY, which localize to the lateral hypothalamus and periventricular/lateral hypothalamus respectively (Alié et al, 2018; Jaggard et al, 2018; Jeong et al, 2018). Both of these nuclei are larger across all three populations of cavefish.…”

“…Therefore, these antagonistic melanocortinergic populations, the orexigenic AGRP neurons and the anorexigenic POMC-expressing neurons, integrate metabolic, and nutrient information to regulate food intake. Recent experiments in fish suggest that the phenotype of AGRP neurons is a derived characteristic of mammalian brain since fish AGRP neurons does not produce NPY, however both zebrafish AGRP and NPY neurons are GABAergic and respond to fasting by increasing neuropeptide gene expression (46).…”
