MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms and lung cancer risk in a female Chinese population

Abstract: ObjectiveTo examine the relationship between polymorphisms in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene and susceptibility to lung cancer in a female Chinese population.MethodA hospital-based case-control study of 388 cases and 388 controls was conducted. Two polymorphisms in MTHFR were detected using TaqMan methods.ResultsThe MTHFR C677T polymorphism was associated with the risk of lung cancer and lung adenocarcinoma. Carriers with the TT genotype of C677T were observed to have an increased risk of… Show more

“…5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid plays an important role in DNA synthesis, repair, methylation, and chromosomal integrity. Previous studies showed that the polymorphisms of 5methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene were associated with the risk of lung cancer in the female population [36,37]. Beyond the literature, in this study, we found a significant reduction of 5methyltetrahydrofolic acid in female SCLC patients.…”

“…Then, we excluded 125 articles that were obviously irrelevant based on titles and abstracts, and the remaining 37 articles were assessed in detail for full text. After full text assessment, we eventually identified 16 [17–32] studies that could be used for the meta-analysis. A flowchart of the process used for identification of studies is presented in Figure 1.…”

“…Some subsequent studies also replicated this result. [25,28,29,32] Previously, several meta-analyses were performed to evaluate the association of CMTHFR gene polymorphisms with lung cancer susceptibility. A recent meta-analysis [13] revealed that the CMTHFR C677T polymorphism is significantly associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in Asian and overall populations but not in Caucasian populations.…”

“…In the Eastern Uttar Pradesh population the frequency of G allele was in the range of 58% to 70% [11][12][13]. MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism is known to be associated with predisposition for different types of cancers like-oral cancer [14], breast cancer [15,16], colorectal cancer [17,18], gastric cancer [19,20], lung cancer [21,22], pancreatic cancer [23,24], and bladder cancer [25,26]. Similarly MTRR A66G gene polymorphism is also found to be associated with various types of cancers such as-cervical cancer [27], lung cancer [28,29], meningioma [30], colorectal cancer [31,32], head and neck cancer [33], pancreatic cancer [23], and breast cancer [34].…”
