MUC13, a Novel Human Cell Surface Mucin Expressed by Epithelial and Hemopoietic Cells

Abstract: Transmembrane mucins are glycoproteins involved in barrier function in epithelial tissues. To identify novel transmembrane mucin genes, we performed a tblastn search of the GenBank EST data bases with a serine/ threonine-rich search string, and a rodent gene expressed in bone marrow was identified. We determined the cDNA sequence of the human orthologue of this gene, MUC13, which localizes to chromosome band 3q13.3 and generates 3.2-kilobase pair transcripts encoding a 512-amino acid protein comprised of an N-… Show more

“…Thirteen human mucins have been cloned or partially cloned to date (MUC-1, -2, -3, -4, -5AC, -5B, -6, -7, -8, -9, -11, -12 and -13; Refs. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. In this study, however, a polyclonal antiserum to the native mucin was used to isolate a cDNA corresponding to the peptide moiety of CA125/MUC16 antigen.…”

“…However, using this same oligonucleotide we were unable to detect any differences between PMA-treated and -untreated cells. 2 It is possible that this region of the promoter is important but that PMAinduced up-regulation involves increased transcriptional activity of Sp1 or other nuclear factors that are already bound to this proximal region of the MUC2 promoter. Further experiments are required to identify the PMA-responsive, ERK-activated MUC2 promoter elements.…”

“…They are synthesized by the epithelial cells lining the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts. Genomic and cDNA sequencing has identified at least fifteen different mucin genes, which encode either secretory or membrane-associated proteins (1)(2)(3). Mucins are expressed in a characteristic tissue-and cell type-specific manner.…”

“…Their main functions are thought to be lubrication and protection of the epithelial surface [1,2] . To date, at least thirteen mucins have been found [3] . MUC1, an epithelial mucin glycoprotein, is highly expressed in lactating mammary glands [4] .…”
