Mucinous eccrine naevus: case report and review of the literature

Abstract: SummaryMucinous eccrine naevus (MEN) is an extremely rare variant of eccrine naevus. There are only nine reported cases in the English literature. We report a 3-monthold boy with a congenital lesion on the lower back, and review the other cases in the literature. In most cases, MEN presents before puberty. The commonest presentation is a unilateral, solitary, brownish nodule without hyperhidrosis occurring on the legs. The diagnosis of this condition is confirmed by the characteristic histopathological feature… Show more

“…Histopathologic examination of the two individual morphologically distinct lesions enabled us to arrive at a diagnosis of EAH. Pathognomonic findings in both the atrophic compressible pedunculated papule on the chest and the more firm, sessile, non‐atrophic, non‐compressible plaque on the face demonstrated a proliferation of hyperplastic eccrine glands in association with foci of dilated capillaries at the dermal‐subcutaneous level . Of note, the mucin‐rich stroma seen in our case has been reported in both EAH and mucinous eccrine nevus, which share a histologically similar presentation and are thought to exist on a spectrum of hamartomas with eccrine elements.…”

“…EAH exists on a spectrum of cutaneous tumors that include eccrine nevus, mucinous eccrine nevus, and EAH. Each diagnostic subtype is characterized by an increase in the number as well as size of mature eccrine glands or ducts, with EAH being distinguished by the added vascular component …”

“…Another review by Dr. Tempark and Shwayder [7] included 10 cases of mucinous eccrine nevus (MEN), 6 females and 4 males, with an age spectrum of 4 months to 57 years, and wide distribution of lesions on the leg, thigh, wrist, lower back, and other sites. Four patients presented with hyperhidrosis and 5 of them complained of pain.…”
