An integrated hydrochemical and geophysical study of the saline paleo-water uprising into the alluvial aquifer of the Oltrepò Pavese plain sector (Po Plain, northern Italy) is presented. This study involved hydrochemical analysis of groundwater, assessment of well logs, and one-, two- and three-dimensional electrical geophysical surveys. The studied area was selected for its characteristic hydrogeological setting. The alluvial aquifer is strongly conditioned by the presence of a buried tectonic discontinuity along which the saline waters are mainly distributed. These waters rise along the discontinuities in the bedrock and flow into the overlying alluvial aquifer. Contamination from saline waters is not spatially and vertically homogeneous within the aquifer. The spatial distribution of Na–Cl waters suggests the existence of plumes of highly mineralized waters that locally reach the aquifer, diffuse and mix with freshwaters. The saline waters show a dilution during upward migration, which is due to mixing with the shallow fresh groundwater. Highly mineralized groundwater is identified even at very shallow depth in correspondence with each plume. On the other hand, there is a lower degree of contamination in those sectors of the aquifer that are further away from the structural discontinuities and this lesser contamination generally only involves the deeper parts of the aquifer.

The hilly landscape of the Periadric area in Central Italy is characterized by mainly marly–clayey foredeep basin deposits (Plio–Pleistocene age). These lithotypes are generally considered aquicludes, if compared with the regional limestone aquifers of Apennines. However, a coarsening upward trend characterizes the upper portion of this stratigraphic sequence, with arenaceous deposits and even conglomerates on the top. From a geomorphological viewpoint, the areas with coarser outcrops show a flat shape and sub-vertical slopes, like boundaries. At the base of these scarps, springs can be found at the interface between coarse and fine deposits, whereas these arenaceous bodies are actual aquifers. Until now, the hydrodynamics and hydrochemical features of this kind of aquifer have not been investigated deeply, because they have always been considered a worthy water resource. However, they could play a crucial role in integrated water management, especially to cope with climate changes and drought periods. Considering these, the main purpose of this study was to investigate from a hydrogeological point of view and to assess the groundwater quantity and quality. Five examples throughout the Abruzzo region were considered. For evaluation and comparisons between water resources, the water volume that infiltrates yearly at each squared kilometer of an aquifer (Mm3/y/km2) was applied. This value was calculated through three different approaches to provide a recharge estimation for this kind of aquifer that is as exhaustive and representative as possible. The results allowed us to characterize the hydrogeological model and to quantify the resources between 0.1 and 0.16 Mm3/y/km2, to be suitable for multi–purpose utilization.

We present the first seismic model of the crust beneath Sakhalin based on P and S‐wave arrival time data from local earthquakes. Based on the results of numerous synthetic tests, we conclude that this model has fair horizontal and vertical resolution to 20–25 km depth. At shallow depths, seismic anomalies are clearly associated with known geological structures, such as the high‐velocity Paleozoic Susunai block and the low‐velocity Cenozoic fold belts along the West Sakhalin Mountains. In vertical sections, we observe westward underthrusting of the Susunai block to a distance of at least 70 km, which may represent the regional compression and considerable crustal shortening in this area. Based on the tomography results, we hypothesize about the origin of the mud volcanism in southern Sakhalin. We propose that because of the general westward underthrusting regime in Sakhalin, hydrocarbon‐rich shelf sediments may be entrained to considerable depths under the rigid Susunai block, which serves as a nonpermeable cover. The released gases find the weakest zones around the Susunai block and along the Tym‐Poronay Fault and escape to the surface to form the South Sakhalin and Lesnovsky mud volcano fields.
