Mueller matrix imaging of pathological slides with plastic coverslips

Abstract: Mueller matrix microscopy is capable of polarization characterization of pathological samples and polarization imaging based digital pathology. In recent years, hospitals are replacing glass coverslips with plastic coverslips for automatic preparations of dry and clean pathological slides with less slide-sticking and air bubbles. However, plastic coverslips are usually birefringent and introduce polarization artifacts in Mueller matrix imaging. In this study, a spatial frequency based calibration method (SFCM)… Show more

“…The fundamental results obtained within the framework of MMM of biological tissues have wide diagnostic application in various fields of medicine. 37 The possibility of obtaining quantitative optical indicators to characterize the evolution of gastric tissue from a healthy state through inflammation to cancer has been demonstrated. 14 The criteria for the Mueller-matrix diagnosis of prostate cancer, 38 bowel, 39 and cervix 40 have been determined.…”

“…However, traditional Mueller matrix imaging requires a large number of intensity measurements, specifically 24 measurements, which are time‐consuming and require complex optical setups and their alignment. Although the use of a single‐shot Mueller polarimeter can reduce the number of measurements, the system becomes very costly [34–36]. In the present manuscript, we introduce a novel approach: multispectral Stokes imaging, which only requires six intensity measurements.…”
