Multi-aperture digital coherent combining for free-space optical communication receivers

Abstract: Space-to-ground optical communication systems can benefit from reducing the size, weight, and power profiles of space terminals. One way of reducing the required power-aperture product on a space platform is to implement effective, but costly, single-aperture ground terminals with large collection areas. In contrast, we present a ground terminal receiver architecture in which many small less-expensive apertures are efficiently combined to create a large effective aperture while maintaining excellent receiver s… Show more

“…Generally, a diversity system is made more effective by the addition of some signal processing such as Equal Gain Combining (EGC) or Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) [222], [223]. There have also been some successful demonstrations of MIMO and DSP with sophisticated, coherent receivers [224], [225]. Space-time block codes (for example Alamouti and Golden codes) have also been shown to be effective, but simple repetition codes (i.e.…”

“…Specifically, each coherent front-end had two stages of amplification and filtering followed by a photonic lightwave circuit that consisted of a 90 • optical hybrid, balanced photodiodes, and trans-impedance amplifiers (see Ref. 5 for further details). The experimental setup in Figure 2 enabled measurements of a CW signal in a double-pass link using the Tx Laser.…”

“…In our previous work, we identified a ground architecture based on an array of small telescopes. 5 That work included a laboratory demonstration of combining signals from each element of this array in a lossless manner over a significant range of input powers by using coherent detection and digital signal processing techniques. In practice, free-space optical communication through the atmosphere must contend with the unwanted effects of atmospheric turbulence.…”

“…FSOC systems often operate in the photon-starving regime, and thus high sensitivity is a critical requirement for the lasercom terminals. For this reason, the coherent receivers based on the phasediversity technique have attracted much attention in the FSOC field because of their exceptionally high sensitivity [4]- [8]. However, the optical complexity and power consumption of the coherent receivers are too high, especially for space-borne platforms.…”
