Multi-Band Heterogeneous Wireless Network Architecture for Industrial Automation: A Techno-Economic Analysis

Abstract: To attain automation across different applications, industries are beginning to leverage advancements in wireless communication technologies. A "one-size-fits-all" solution cannot be applied since wireless technologies are selected according to application needs, quality of service requirements, and economic restrictions. To balance the trade-off between technical and economic requirements, a multi-band heterogeneous wireless network architecture is presented and discussed in this paper. Wireless local area ne… Show more

“…To enable the installation of wireless sensors on plant assets, a wireless architecture based on a distributed antenna system (DAS) to support multiple communication types was evaluated. Idaho National Laboratory studied a wireless network deployment strategy that would enable applications ranging from low-to high-power needs, low-to high-frequency ranges, and short-to long-range communica-tions, as seen in Figure 2 (Manjunatha & Agarwal, 2022).…”

“…This report is the latest in a series of documents detailing online monitoring, wireless communication networks, and the development of diagnostic and prognostic models using heterogenous data regarding critical balance of plant equipment in NPPs [2][3][4][5][6][7]. The previous documents in this series evaluated potential wireless technologies and communication networks inside NPPs, based on their performance and economics [2][3][4][5]; assessed vibration sensors with wireless capabilities [6]; developed formal methodologies for cleaning data and objectively comparing ML prognostic models [7]; and development of condition-based monitoring and preventative-maintenance optimization [8].…”
