Multi-Disciplinary Green IT Archival Analysis: A Pathway for Future Studies

Abstract: Abstract:With the growth of information technology (IT), there is a growing global concern about the environmental impact of such technologies. As such, academics in several research disciplines consider research on green IT a vibrant theme. While the disparate knowledge in each discipline is gaining substantial momentum, we need a consolidated multidisciplinary view of the salient findings of each research discipline for green IT research to reach its full potential. We reviewed 390 papers published on green … Show more

“…With especially Green IS as a relatively novel, and practice-based topic [33], we took the small sample as sufficient for a descriptive analysis [17]. We consequently did not aim for statistical theory testing, or significance analysis, but chose to document and outline potential trends within our data.…”

“…While 87.3% (48) followed or introduced means to lower their energy consumption, 72.7% (40) already actively and regularly inspected their general energy consumption. For 60% (33), these energy saving means included the use of technical equipment, and for 58.2% (32) also the use of non-technical means. Moreover, 58.2% (32) of all sample companies used renewable energy, while 12.7% (7) planned to use such.…”

“…Concerning the different capitalizations of GIT and GIS [5] and in the ongoing discourse about using them distinctively [6], interchangeability [7], and integratively [8], we agree with the latter, viewing GIT as "measures and initiatives which decrease the negative environmental impact of manufacturing, operations, and disposal of Information Technology (IT) equipment and infrastructure" [8], and GIS as "practices which determine the investment in, deployment, use and management of Information Systems (IS) in order to minimize the negative environmental impact of IS, business operations, and IS-enabled products and services" [8]. To address both GIT and GIS, we use GIT/GIS.…”
