Multi-Layered Thin Films of Ordered Alumina Particles

Abstract: Multi-layered alumina thin films with crystalline anisotropy and high surface area were prepared from ultra-fine particles of alumina using a multi-bilayer cast film of a double-chain ammonium amphiphile as a molecular template.

“…The research has been motivated by a purpose of developing functional materials such as sensors, electrode-modifiers, nonlinear optical devices and pyroelectric materials (Czikkely et al, 1970;Ichinose et al, 1995;Kotov et al, 1997;Kuhn and Kuhn, 1996;Lvov et al, 1996;and Tsutsumi et al, 1992). It is possible for organo-clay hybrid films to create new functionalized materials because they possess characteristics such as an easily changing layer-by-layer structure or precisely controllable film thickness, or a variety of physical properties, which are not present in each of the separate components (Chemical Society of Japan, Kikan Kagaku Sosetsu, 1999.…”

“…Similarly, multilayered alumina films with crystalline anisotoropy and high surface area were prepared using multi-bilayer soft-template films. 62 Here, an aqueous dispersion of cationic amphiphiles was first prepared, to which alumina sol was added under sonication. The mixed dispersion was cast on a solid support followed by calcination in air at high temperature.…”

“…They have high mechanical strength, mechanical stability and provide unique conducting, semi-conducting and dielectric properties. Organo clay hybrid film is an important area of research in recent time and has applications in sensors, electrode modifiers, non-linear optical devices and pyroelectric materials [19][20][21][22]. Smectites clay minerals exhibit high affinity for metachromic cationic dyes because the negative charges of the smectites are compensated by the positive charges of cationic organic materials by cation exchange reaction [23].…”
