Multi-Objective Topology Design of Industrial Ethernet Networks

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to investigate methods to guarantee the network performance of industrial Ethernet networks by an optimized topology design. The proposed approach differs from former works on network design by taking into account the specific requirements of industrial applications, the Quality of Service (QoS) related features of industrial Ethernet protocols, and the increasing network complexity in the industrial field. A multi-objective variable neighbourhood search algorithm (MOVNS) is pres… Show more

“…A relative delay metric was adopted to minimize communication delays with respect to the maximum tolerable delay. The same authors formulated in [12] an optimization problem, which enhanced their previous proposal with network reliability requirements. In [13], the sensor layout planning in water distribution systems was address by means of controllability analysis.…”

“…This network design problem has been shown to be NP-hard [2]. Then, several heuristic algorithms have been proposed to deal with the specific topology design problems, including Genetic Algorithm (GA), Neural Network, Tabu Search, and Ant Colony Optimization.…”

“…However, the traffic they described is too simple and the network size is small. In [2,8,10] the traffic load as a known constant value in advance and then the traffic matrix is applied to the network. But the traffic on the communication networks is complicated and is difficult to predict [11].…”
