Multi-organ dysfunction secondary to severe wasp envenomation

Abstract: Wasp sting is not an uncommon incident. Around 56% to 94% of the population is stung at least once in their lifetime by a member of the order Hymenoptera which includes wasps, bees, and ants. The response to a wasp sting may vary from mild local reaction to severe systemic and anaphylactic reactions. The clinical picture and mortality rate tend to be more severe in adults compared to children. We present a 32-year-old agricultural worker who was bitten by multiple wasps while on a coconut tree. In spite of the… Show more

“…Some studies reported the occurrence of ischemic stroke in association with hymenopteran stings, but most of these cases were associated with Vespidae stings [ 39 , 40 ]. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is generally reported after multiple wasp stings, but it is less reported because of ant venom, unless the stings are extremely severe [ 41 ]. Our study had no cases of such stings, which may have been because the Formicidae group had less serious complications leading to required hospitalization.…”

“…(3). A series of cases with AKI and MOF as a result of multiple wasp stings have been reported in literature; however, the number of cases reported in Turkey is very low (2,3). Here, we present a case of a 7-year-old male patient who died within 2 days of developing MOF and shock resulting from multiple wasp stings.…”

“…Although clinical findings are associated with the number of wasp stings, the strength of the venom, and individual immunity, cases of AKI or MOF in response to a single wasp sting have been reported in the literature (2,3). The mortality rate of such patients with AKI is 25-50%…”
