Multi-paradigm modelling for cyber–physical systems: a descriptive framework

Abstract: The complexity of cyber–physical systems (CPSs) is commonly addressed through complex workflows, involving models in a plethora of different formalisms, each with their own methods, techniques, and tools. Some workflow patterns, combined with particular types of formalisms and operations on models in these formalisms, are used successfully in engineering practice. To identify and reuse them, we refer to these combinations of workflow and formalism patterns as modelling paradigms. This paper proposes a unifying… Show more

“…At that time, there was not yet any precise definition of MPM. However, the work of working group on foundations of MPM4CPS during the COST action IC1404 initiated the recent work [9,10], which provided a more precise definition of MPM. In this survey, we used this definition that we introduce in the following.…”

“…In [9,10] the authors consider modeling as a generalization of programming so that programming languages are a subset of modeling languages and therefore, programming paradigms are also a subset of modeling paradigms (the aforementioned programming paradigms are also modeling paradigms).…”

“…Control loops may require differential equations, while reactions of a system can be modeled as a Discrete Event System. Multi-paradigm modeling therefore combines various approaches to best support engineering of each aspect of a CPPS (e.g., MPM4CPS [2], or model-integrated mechatronics [33]).…”
