Multi-Tb/s sustainable MAN scenario enabled by VCSEL-based innovative technological solutions

Abstract: Innovative photonic solutions designed and developed in the H2020 research project PASSION are presented for the future metropolitan area network (MAN) supporting different aggregated data traffic volumes and operating at heterogenous granularities. System performance evaluated both by simulations and experimentation regarding the proposed vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) -based modular sliceable bandwidth/bitrate variable transceiver (S-BVT) are shown in realistic MANs organized by hierarchical … Show more

“…In this paper we assess the performance of the above-mentioned transmitter, employing coherent detection with reduced complexity [16]. In particular we compare simulations and experimental results; we evaluate the transported capacity for single channel transmission in function of nodes number, considering the actual VCSEL chirp coefficients and frequency response and we confirm already obtained simulated results [15] demonstrating reach distances of hundreds of kms typical of MANs, maintaining a capacity per channel higher than 50 Gb/s.…”

“…As multi-Tb/s transmitter modules including multiple C-band DM-VCSELs and WDM multiplexers in SOI chips can be aggregated to target a very fine WDM granularity (i.e. 25-GHz) [16], SSB DMT modulation appears one of the most promising formats to be exploited. Indeed, the combination with simplified coherent detection allows to bridge MAN typical link distances thanks to DSP CD compensation, but due to the presence of numerous hops between nodes inside metropolitan area networks the effect of filtering has also to be taken into account.…”

“…In fact, wavelength selective switches (WSSs) are adopted to handle spectrum aggregation with a granularity of 25 GHz, and a polymer-based PS module to handle the spatial dimension [8,15]. The WSS can be implemented using either an InP monolithic approach or a hybrid approach adopting InP for active elements (SOA) and SiPh for passives [16]. Modular upgradability is achieved repeating the same fundamental blocks; the interconnection with multi-core fibers is performed via fan-in and fan-out structures.…”

“…This is obtained by multiplexing 4 fundamental modules with VCSEL operating wavelengths suitably tuned to have 25 GHz spacing. In fact, the VCSELs in a module can be fine-tuned in a range of 75 GHz through the bias current and stabilized by a temperature cooler [16,18]. The optical flows originating from the four different 40-VCSEL modules are then aggregated in the spectral domain [18].…”
