The possibility of detecting holes in CFRP thin-walled square tubes by response surface method based on potential measurement is investigated in this paper. With 10 electrodes set on the edge of the tube ends, a response surface model for hole identification was established by calculating potential responses of CFRP thin-walled square tubes with different circle holes on ANSYS. Virtual simulation experiment revealed that the response surface method using normalized potential data is effective to identify the circle hole on the CFRP thin-walled square tubes, especially for estimating the size of the hole. Larger error was observed in the some position identifications, including the longitudinal and transverse coordinates of the hole center. The causes of these errors and methods to improve accuracy were discussed.
