Multiecho water‐fat separation and simultaneous R estimation with multifrequency fat spectrum modeling

Abstract: Multiecho chemical shift-based water-fat separation methods are seeing increasing clinical use due to their ability to estimate and correct for field inhomogeneities. Previous chemical shiftbased water-fat separation methods used a relatively simple signal model that assumes both water and fat have a single resonant frequency. However, it is well known that fat has several spectral peaks. This inaccuracy in the signal model results in two undesired effects. First, water and fat are incompletely separated. Seco… Show more

“…Sequence parameters were as follows: TR=10 msec, 6 echoes (TE1 = 1.45 msec, ΔTE = 1.1 msec), matrix 108 × 107 × 4 mm 3 , voxel size 1.8 × 1.8 × 4 mm, 20 slices, flip angle 3° (to minimize T1 bias effects), acquisition time of 1:05 min. The proton‐density fat fraction quantification was based on a complex‐based water–fat separation with a signal model considering the multipeak fat spectrum and modeling a single T2* decay 34, 35…”

“…Specimens were at room temperature. The imaging sequence was an investigational prototype from the manufacturer called IDEAL IQ, which was based on previous methods [12,13]. The acquisition was a sagittal 3D volume, spoiled gradient echo with "Minimum" repetition time (TR) and "Minimum Full" echo time (TE).…”

“…IDEAL may provide the most accurate and robust analytical results (34), but its availability is severely limited. This method can currently be implemented only on a subset of GE systems, and T2*-IDEAL (35), which incorporates estimation of T2* variations, is currently available at only six sites worldwide.…”
