“…Some of them, without the intention of a comprehensive review are: modification in the number and characteristics of vapor and liquid transfer between columns [60,61]; Simultaneous design of thermally coupled and heat integrated systems [12,[62][63][64], thermodynamic analysis [2,5,6,[65][66][67], generation and analysis of sequences with reduced number of column sections [68][69][70][71], alternatives for columns with one or multiple walls [72,73].…”

“…We have recently learned how to draw fully thermally coupled distillation column arrangements using multiple distillation columns with only one reboiler and one condenser, which are more flexible and easier to operate (Agrawal and Fidkowski, 1998). We are also learning about double-effect and multi-effect multicomponent distillation schemes, which have the potential to reduce the already low heat demands of thermally coupled distillation schemes by 20 to 50% (Siirola, 1995;Agrawal, 2000). It is especially noteworthy that each of the energy saving arrangements described above is accompanied by decreased capital investment!…”

“…Erika Fabiola Abad-Zarate, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández*, Salvador Hernández and Agustín R. Uribe-Ramírez Universidad de Guanajuato,Facultad de Química,Noria Alta s/n,Guanajuato,Gto.,36050,México distillation sequences based on conventional columns (Triantafyllou and Smith, 1992;Hernández and Jiménez, 1999;Hernández et al, 2003;Rong et al, 2000;Blancarte-Palacios et al, 2003;Agrawal, 2000;Rong et al, 2003). Such coupled distillation sequences use thermal links that can be implemented by eliminating either a reboiler or a condenser and then introducing recycle streams in the vapour or the liquid phases, respectively.…”
