Abstract:A superior vena cava syndrome most often results from an intrathoracic tumor; a frequent cause of the inferior vena cava obstruction is a proximal expansion of a thrombophlebitis. When both causes can be excluded and patient survives the initial symptoms for years, a chronic fibrosis in the mediastinum or (and) in the retroperitoneum have to be suspected as locations of a multifocal fibrotic diathesis.
