Multifunctional silk fabric via surface modification of nano-SiO2

Abstract: Silk fabrics have poor resistance to ultraviolet (UV) light and to wrinkles. To improve these properties, we propose a finishing method of coating the silk fabric surface with nano-silica (nano-SiO2). The results show that the UV protective factor (UPF) value could reach a maximum of 84.52 after finishing in 10 g/L nano-SiO2 and 20 g/L silane coupling agent (KH570) solution at 80℃. Moreover, the treated silk fabrics showed improved wrinkle resistance and hydrophobicity. The surface morphology and crosslink act… Show more

“…The PCM@SiO 2 covering on fabrics was noticeably effective at increasing UV resistance; the UPF values were 27.22 for FT10, 52.94 for FT20 and 77.85 (in Table 2) for FT30, implying a potential function of the textile as anti-ultraviolet protection. The silica nanocapsules on the functional textile played a major role in reflecting UV light and displayed excellent anti-ultraviolet properties [39]. To assess the durability of the anti-ultraviolet property of the functional textile, the samples were washed over 10 cycles, after which the UPF was measured.…”

“…The materials also demonstrated great thermostability and cytocompatibility, as well as laundry resistance. Therefore, the multifunctional silk fabrics demonstrated potential to be used for self-cleaning, protection and non-ironing applications [ 83 ].…”

“…Besides the UV radiation shielding issue, silk fabrics also suffer from a severe wrinkling problem during daily wear. Because the chains in silk can freely move under external stress, wrinkles can be easily formed by the movement between the neighboring chains, especially during laundry and daily wear. The wrinkles significantly influence the appearance of silk clothes. Therefore, antiwrinkling nature or wrinkle resistance is highly desired for silk fabrics as well.…”
