By taking advantage of typical dealloying and subsequent aging methods, a novel homogeneous porous brass with a micro/nano hierarchical structure was prepared without any chemical modification. The treatment of commercial brass with hot concentrated HCl solution caused preferential etching of Zn from Cu62Zn38 alloy foil, leaving a microporous skeleton with an average tortuous channel size of 1.6 μm for liquid transfer. After storage in the atmosphere for 7 days, the wettability of the dealloyed brass changed from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic with a contact angle > 156° and sliding angle < 7°. The aging treatment enhanced the hydrophobicity of the brass by the formation of Cu2O on the surface. By virtue of the opposite wettability to water and oil, the aged brass separated surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with separation efficiency of over 99.4% and permeate flux of about 851 L·m−2·h−1 even after recycling for 60 times. After 10 times of tape peeling or sandpaper abrasion, the aged brass maintained its superhydrophobicity, indicating its excellent mechanical stability. Moreover, the aged brass still retained its superhydrophobicity after exposure to high temperatures or corrosive solutions, displaying high resistance to extreme environments. The reason may be that the bicontinuous porous structure throughout the whole foil endows stable mechanical properties to tolerate extreme environments. This method should have a promising future in expanding the applications of alloys.

A microfluidic strategy of smart calcium alginate (CA) capsules is presented to immobilize Pseudomonas aeruginosa to treat oil slicks effectively. The capsule wall is embedded with poly (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) sub‐microspheres as thermo‐responsive switches. CA capsules, with a diameter of 3.26 mm and a thin wall thickness about 12.8 μm, have satisfying monodispersity, cavity structure, and dense surface structures. The capsules possess excellent encapsulation of bacteria, which are fixed in a restricted space and become more aggregated. It overcomes the disadvantages of a long fermentation production cycle, easy loss of bacteria, and susceptibility to shear effect. The smart CA capsules immobilized with bacteria treat model wastewater containing soybean oil or diesel and display favorable fermentation ability. The capsules can effectively treat oil slicks with high concentration, and it is an economical way for processing oily wastewater.Practitioner Points A thermo‐responsive calcium alginate capsule was prepared by microfluidic strategy. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is environmentally friendly in treating oil slicks. The capsules, immobilized bacteria, treat oil slicks effectively. This study provides an economical way for processing different oily water.

Blow-Spun Nanofibrous Membrane for Simultaneous Treatment of Emulsified Oil/Water Mixtures, Dyes, and Bacteria

Membrane separation is of great significance due to its unique performance in treating wastewater. However, the simultaneous treatment of oily emulsions and other complex pollutants in water remains challenging. Herein, we have proposed a simple strategy to prepare a multifunctional titanium dioxide/silver nanoparticles/polyacrylonitrile (TiO 2 /AgNPs/PAN) nanofibrous membrane. The experimental results showed that the combination of the hierarchical structure composed of PAN nanofibers and Ag/TiO 2 nanoprotrusions contributed to the superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity (UOCA = 153.3 ± 2.0°). Further, the nanofibrous membrane exhibited a rapid gravity-driven permeate flux (>1829.37 ± 83.51 L m −2 h −1 ) and an ultrahigh separation efficiency (>99.9%) for the surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect between the PAN fibers and TiO 2 /Ag heterojunction, Rhodamine B dye in water can be removed quickly and efficiently (up to 97.67% in 90 min). More importantly, the obtained nanofibrous membrane exhibited ultrahigh stability in different harsh environments. The design of superoleophobic nanofiber membrane with a high separation efficiency and high photocatalytic activity has great potential for practical applications in the purification of oily wastewater.
