Multifunctionality and agrarian transition in alternative agro‐food production in the global South: The case of organic shrimp certification in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Abstract: Processes of globalisation in the conventional food provision system have had widespread negative impacts on small-scale farmers. Yet, alternative food networks, which are characterised by more sustainable production/consumption practices and fairer trade relations, have increasingly been 'going global' and, in the process, have been integrating small-scale farms in the South. One such high-value export-led commodity is certified organic shrimp. International third-party certification schemes are becoming popu… Show more

“…Thematic analysis also identified some of the frameworks used to examine sustainability in AFNs. Frameworks include tactile spaces [26], development economics theory of urban bias [52], food utopia [53], multifunctionality [54], political ecology [30], viable system model [55] and convention theory [35,56]. It is also important to note that no frameworks for the assessment of the three dimensions of sustainability based on indicators or metrics were used in the papers of our sample.…”

“…International resource management certification schemes create networks called ‘transnational alternative commodity networks’ (Omoto & Scott, 2016). The commodity ‘network’ approach – in contrast to the ‘chain’ approach, which simply analyses a linear chain of pure economic activities – gives a wider view in analysing a ‘web’ of material and non‐material relations that cannot stand alone without social, political, and economic actors.…”

“…For example, increased awareness of mangrove conservation in Europe has reached the southernmost point of Vietnam, where many small‐scale household‐based shrimp farms exist. This has resulted in those farms being internationally certified by Naturland's organic scheme, thereby influencing the local producers' marketing patterns (Omoto & Scott, 2016). There have been many papers that have discussed the environmental, economic, and social impact of such international resource management certification schemes on producers in forestry (Auld, 2014; Cashore et al, 2004; Visseren‐Hamakers & Pattberg, 2013), fishery (Bellchambers et al, 2014; Gulbrandsen, 2009), and aquaculture (Islam, 2014), among other industries relying on ecosystem services.…”
