Multiloculated renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: Multiloculated renal cell carcinoma and multilocular renal cyst with renal cell carcinoma are uncommon diseases. We report on 2 cases of multiloculated renal cell carcinoma. To our knowledge 16 cases of multiloculated renal cell carcinoma and multilocular renal cyst with renal cell carcinoma have been previously described in detail. The authors review the literature and discuss the aetiology and diagnosis of the disease.

“…Judging from the fact that carcinomas existed in the acquired cysts, they might have originated from the cyst epithelia. It has been suggested that malignant transformation of a multilocular renal cyst may be another etiology of MCRCC (37). Hartman et al divided cystic renal cell carcinomas into four pathologic groups (4, 5) and reported that the cysts were formed secondarily, based on tumour degeneration.…”

“…Some renal cell carcinomas, although not common, show similar morphological appearance to this type of benign tumor. It is difficult to pre‐operatively differentiate multilocular cystic renal cell carcinomas from benign multilocular cystic tumors 5,6 . Therefore, small tumors of this type must be closely monitored, and surgical treatment should be considered if there are any signs of malignant changes 7 .…”
