Multimodal brain imaging effect of “Adjust Zang-fu and Arouse Spirit” electroacupuncture on diabetic cognitive impairment: study protocol of a randomized, sham-controlled pilot trial

Abstract: Background Diabetic cognitive impairment (DCI) is a serious chronic complication caused by diabetes. The pathogenesis of DCI is complex, but brain nerve injury and brain nerve cell apoptosis are important pathological changes. Multimodal brain imaging is one of the most important techniques to study the neural mechanism of the brain. For the clinical treatment of DCI, there is no effective targeted Western medicine and a lack of clear drug intervention methods. Therefore, there is an urgent nee… Show more

“…Brain nerve injury and neuronal apoptosis are important pathological changes of DCI [ 52 ]. We performed immunoblot assay and the results indicated that FX5 antagonized the PA-induced downregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins (Bcl-xl and Bcl-2) and upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins (cleaved caspase-3 (C-C3) and Bax) (Fig.…”

“…All puncture points were connected to Han's Electroacupuncture instrument. After reviewing the literature [ 22 , 23 ], EA was performed using a stimulation current of 1 mA, frequency of 15 Hz, duration of 30 min, and once a day [ 14 ].…”

“…Currently, there are no effective drugs for diabetes-associated cognitive impairment. Acupuncture and moxibustion have shown good treatment effects against cognitive disorders [ 14 , 15 ]. Electroacupuncture application (EA) at Zusanli (ST36) and Yishu (EX-B3) can decrease inflammatory cytokines levels, thereby improving learning and memory function in diabetic rats with cognitive disorders [ 16 ].…”

“…The structural MRI data will be analyzed using the VBM toolbox within SPM12. The steps will include interlaminar time difference correction, spatial difference correction, head motion correction, normalization, and Gaussian smoothing (Yao et al, 2021). During head motion correction, images of participants with translations of less than 1 mm and rotational movements of less than 2 • will be involved in the subsequent analysis.…”
