Multipath Transmission for the Internet: A Survey

Abstract: Smart devices equipped with multiple network interfaces are becoming commonplace. Nevertheless, even though multiple interfaces can be used to connect to the Internet, their capabilities have not been fully utilized yet because the default TCP/IP stack supports only a single interface for communication. This situation is now changing due to the emergence of multipath protocols on different network stack layers. For example, many IP level approaches have been proposed utilizing tunneling mechanisms for hiding m… Show more

“…The authors provide a detailed investigation targeting two main design issues, such as: control plane problem on how to compute and select the routes and the data plane problem on how to split the flow over the computed paths. On the other side, Li et al [15] investigate the multipath solutions at each layer of the Internet protocol stack including link, network, transport, application, and cross layers.…”

“…Our goal in this survey is to offer the interested reader a comprehensive point of view on the up-to-date research on transport protocols, which is lacking in other recent surveys that separately focus on ossification [16], multipath transmissions [31], or congestion control schemes for MPTCP [32] or in data centers [33].…”

“…Moreover, it is possible to comprehensively utilize the heterogeneous wireless networks because of abundant wireless network resources along the railway [12]. In this paper, we try to deploy the replication link mechanism in highspeed mobile scenario.…”
