Multiperforate Septa in Lichens

Abstract: SUMMARYAscomycetes usually have only one pore in the hyphal septum. This paper reports the first observation of multiperforate septa in lichen fungi using the electron microscope. Multiperforate septa are reported in Peltigera, Peltula and Hydrothyria. The extra pores probably facilitate intercellular transport of nutrients and water within the thallus. Previous reports of multiperforate septa in other lichen genera using the light mieroscope need to be verified by electron micioscope studies.

“…In some lichens fungal septa are known to be multiperforate, and the idea has already been advanced that this might facilitate symplastic nutrient movement (e.g. Wetmore, 1973). It is argued here that the most likely mechanism for $$P translocation is active and symplastic by nature (i.e.…”

“…Plasmodesmata are present in some Zygomycota and Ascomycota (Fig. 6), while taxa in several classes of filamentous ascomycetes and one basidiomycete taxon possess multiperforate septa (not illustrated; Reichle and Alexander, 1965;Wetmore, 1973;Doublés and McLaughlin, 1991).…”

“…Gametangial septa in the Zygomycota are commonly multiperforate (Hawker andGooday, 1966, 1967;O'Donnell, Hooper, and Fields, 1976;O'Donnell et aI., 1977b;Gibson, Kimbrough, and Benny, 1986), and vegetative septa may also be multiperforate (O'Donnell et aI., I 977a;Jeffries and Young, 1983). Multipored septa occur in the medullary hyphae ofa number oflichenized ascomycete genera (Wetmore, 1973). Septa in hyphae of Fusarium spp.…”

“…The typical basidiomycete and ascomycete septum is perforated by a single, central pore, and the functional significance ofthe relatively uncommon multiperforate septum is unclear. Wetmore (1973) hypothesized that multiple pores in lichens may improve translocation of water and nutrients. Similarly, Reichle and Alexander (1965) suggested that improved translocation might be advantageous in Fusarium.…”
