Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome: A Principal Component Analysis of Symptoms

Abstract: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic and/or recurrent condition with somatic, cognitive, and affective symptoms following a contact with chemical agents whose concentrations do not correlate with toxicity in the general population. Its prevalence is not well defined; it mainly affects women between 40 and 50 years, without variations in ethnicity, education and economic status. We aimed to assess the core symptoms of this illness in a sample of Italian patients. Two physicians investigated differen… Show more

“…Activation of the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex might be related, respectively, with the intensity and valence of the smell emotional experience [ 143 ]. The amygdala and cingulate cortex also showed abnormal activation in patients with multiple chemical sensitivity [ 144 , 145 ], which is associated with a high prevalence of headache [ 146 ] and was observed in up to 20% of migraineurs [ 147 ].…”

“…Evaluation of factors associated with sexual dysfunction in psoriasis in a cohort of 1409 patients doi: 10.1111/ced.15058 Dear Editor, Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, which, compared with other chronic diseases, has a higher negative impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients. 1 QoL has therefore become central to the management of patients with psoriasis. In recent years, particular attention has been given to several aspects contributing to patient QoL, including sexual dysfunction (SD), which is defined as not wanting or enjoying sexual experience.…”

“…Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic clinical condition characterized by the appearance of a group of symptoms caused by exposure to chemical compounds that are tolerable for the general population [ 1 , 2 ]. The term, proposed by Cullen in 1987 [ 3 ], has the following characteristics: It is an acquired syndrome following documented environmental exposure that has objectively produced negative health effects.…”
