Abstract:Cognitive task performance can be supported through multiple neural pathways, a concept referred to as brain degeneracy. We used a novel approach to consider brain degeneracy during a visual short-term memory task (VSTM) across the adult lifespan in the Cam-CAN study (n = 113, 23-87 years old). Our main goal was to identify subgroups of participants whose VSTM performance was characterized by distinct brain activation patterns. First, we identified seven brain modules that responded similarly to the VSTM task … Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
