Multiple phase screen modeling of ionospheric scintillation along radio occultation raypaths

Abstract: We present the Radio Occultation Scintillation Simulator (ROSS), which uses the multiple phase screen method (MPS) to simulate the forward scatter of radio waves by irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere during radio occultation experiments. ROSS simulates propagation through equatorial plasma bubbles which are modeled as homogeneous electron density fluctuations modulated by a Chapman profile in altitude and a Gaussian window in the magnetic east‐west direction. We adjust the parameters of the density mo… Show more

“…This implies that GNSS RO is more sensitive to the Es layer occurrence. In this regard, Carrano et al () used RO simulator tool to propagate waves in an RO geometry and space‐to‐ground geometry and showed the expected difference in sensitivity. The main reason is the geometry with respect to the plasma irregularities, and the propagation path length through an Es layer is substantially different.…”

“…In these works, pure numerical calculations were performed with the background ionosphere modeled by a homogeneous slab utilizing the finite difference method. Other works [ Grimault , ; Beniguel , ; Rino , ; Carrano et al , ] employed another pure numerical method (the multiple phase screen technique), based on the split step technique [ Knepp , ], to deal with the case of the inhomogeneous background medium.…”

“…The numerical approaches, as the multiple phase screen method [ Grimault , ; Beniguel , ; Rino , ; Carrano et al , ], based on the split step technique [ Knepp , ], or the finite difference method [ Liu et al , ; Liu and Yeh , ; Engavale and Bhattacharyya , ] permit a pure numerical treatment of this problem. Along with this, an analytical consideration, which can give physical insight into the problem, is also of importance, but to obtain it is a fairly complicated procedure.…”

“…Carrano et al developed the Radio Occultation Scintillation Simulator (ROSS). They used the MPS technique to simulate the forward scatter of radio waves by irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere during radio occultation experiments [15]. Deshpande developed a model called Satellite-beacon Ionospheric-scintillation Global Model of the upper Atmosphere (SIGMA) to simulate GNSS scintillations for high-latitude areas.…”
