Multiple Sclerosis Associated With Anaemic Syndrome: A Retrospective Analysis and Literature Review

Abstract: ABSTRACT:An association of MS with different anaemic syndromes, most often pernicious and Vit. B12 deficiency anaemia has been reported in the literature. Accordingly, the coincidence of anaemia with MS has been considered to impact seriously on clinical presentation, therapeutic strategy and patient's quality of life. Objective: To perform a retrospective analysis of 18 cases with anaemic syndrome as a factor of comorbidity in patients with MS.Material and methods: 18 MS patients (15 women and 3 men) with RRMS… Show more

“…A sensory fiber abnormality has been reported in RLS patients . Clinical studies showed a high prevalence of RLS in patients with celiac disease and multiple sclerosis, who have iron‐deficiency anemia and peripheral neuropathy . Peripheral nerve conduction velocity has been found to be positively correlated with hemoglobin and hematocrit levels .…”

“…The possible cause of low hemoglobin levels in our subjects can be explained by referring to study of Deleva [35] in which the researchers examined the relationship between MS and different types of anemia (anaemic syndrome). In their study, 18 MS patients (13 of them were diagnosed with the relapsing-remitting type of MS) were examined in terms of some types of anemia.…”

“…They described the subjects as eight patients with pernicious anemia, three patients with iron deficiency anemia, 6 patients with vitamin B12 deficiency, and one patient who was diagnosed with heterozygous thalassemia. Deleva [35] concluded that there is a significant relationship between MS and various types of anemia. Therefore, the possible cause of low hemoglobin level in most patients of the present study could be due to anaemic syndrome and multifactorial anemia.…”

“…Another study (Kumar et al, 2010) indicates that iron deficiency is associated with impairment of cell mediated immunity [29]. Accordingly, the combination between [25], [26] and [29] supports the lower level of iron and the higher level of HbA 1c in multiple sclerosis patients. Consequently, the present study indicates the opposite correlation between (hemoglobin / Fe) and glycated hemoglobin A 1c levels, Table (1).…”

“…An association between multiple sclerosis and anemic syndromes (results from a decrease in iron level) has been reported. In this regard, a previous study (Deleva et al, 2012) has suggested that the coincidence of anemia with multiple sclerosis has been consider to impact seriously on clinical presentation, therapeutic strategy and the patients quality of life [25]. Another study (Sinha et al, 2012) has investigated the effect of iron deficiency anemia on HbA 1c levels, they observed that HbA 1c levels are higher in iron deficiency anemia patients.…”
