Multiple skeletal and dental pathologies in a late Miocene mesotheriid (Mammalia, Notoungulata) from the Altiplano of Bolivia: Palaeoecological inferences

Abstract: We report here the first case of bilateral mandibular hypodontia for a notoungulate, further associated with exostosis on various limb bones. We describe a partial skeleton of a palaeopathological individual of the notoungulate mesotheriid Plesiotypotherium achirense, from the Upper Miocene site of Achiri, Bolivian Altiplano. The main pathology is hypodontia of two first molars on both sides of the jaw. Other craniomandibular affliction, likely related to the latter pathology, are a striking overgrowth of two … Show more

“…(10.42 ± 0.09 to 9.42 ± 0.10 Ma dated at the mid‐part; Fernández‐Monescillo et al . 2019) and the ‘Estratos’ Muyu Huasi (which lacks geochronological dating) were correlated with the Huayquerian Age (Hoffstetter 1986; Marshall & Sempere 1991), or more likely with the Chasicoan–Huayquerian range (Pérez et al . 2021).…”

“…In Achiri, C. scabrata occurs 58 meters below the tuff ACH-TUF-3 (Fig. 2) dated as 10.42 ± 0.09 Ma (Fernández-Monescillo et al, 2019). The sedimentary dynamics seems to be fairly steady and constant over the complete sequence measured at Cerro Pisakeri (Fig.…”

“…This unit was deposited in a wide fluvial and lacustrine plain in a backarc basin. The Achiri locality is well known by the fossil vertebrate faunas recovered from the Mauri Fm, M6 (e.g., Villarroel 1974;Villarroel and Marshall, 1983;Marshall et al, 1983;Hoffstetter, 1986;Saint-André, 1993, 1996Pujos et al, 2012;Fernández-Monescillo et al, 2019;Gaudin et al, 2022). The fossiliferous levels of the Achiri locality were dated between 10.5 Ma (K-Ar, at Hako-kota; Evernden et al, 1977) and 8 Ma (K-Ar, west of San Andrés, Evernden et al, 1977).…”

“…The second specimen, MNHN-Bol-V 011887, is an isolated right astragalus. Both specimens were recovered from the Cerros Pisakeri and Virgen Pata, Mauri 6 Formation, Unit IV (Mayoan-early Chasicoan SALMAs; Evernden et al 1977;Fernández-Monescillo et al 2019) 3-4 km southeast the village of Achiri (Pacajes Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia) roughly 50 km southwest of the capital city, La Paz (Figure 2).…”

“…The goal of the present report is to provide such characters and to reconsider the validity of post-Santacrucian SALMA Xyophorus species. We report here on an isolated squamosal and intact attached ear region, along with an isolated complete astragalus, recovered from deposits dating to the late Mayoan-early Chasicoan SALMAs (late Miocene, Fernández-Monescillo et al 2019) near Achiri village, in the Bolivian Altiplano. This material clearly pertains to a nothrotheriid, and we reasonably consider it to be allied with the post-Santacrucian material assigned to "Xyophorus" by Brandoni (2014) and Brandoni et al (2019).…”
