Multiple skeletal muscle metastases from poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma

Abstract: We report here a rare case of gastric carcinoma with multiple intramuscular metastases. A 71-year-old man presented with rapidly evolving swelling of his left thigh and severe pain. Three years earlier, he had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer. A computed tomography scan showed unusual swellings in multiple skeletal muscles with no vessel or bone invasion. Importantly, the affected muscles did not contain distinct masses but were diffusely enlarged. Patholog… Show more

“…We searched the PubMed database using the keywords of "gastric cancer, " "muscle metastasis, " and "muscular metastasis". We found six muscular metastases cases after curative gastrectomy (Table 2) [14][15][16][17][18][19]. The median age was 61 years (range 47-82 years) and all patients were male.…”

“…Prognosis remains poor namely due to the presence of a widely metastatic disease and lack of effective treatment modalities [16–17]. Treatment options include palliative chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical resection for symptomatic relief.…”

“…We reviewed the reported cases of skeletal muscle metastasis from gastric cancer. To search the literature, we used key words of “gastric cancer (or carcinoma)” and “muscle (or musclar) metastasis (or metastases)”, and found five cases that had metachronous skeletal muscle metastasis without any other organ metastases after curative gastrectomy (Table 1 ) [ 2 , 7 10 ]. In detail, all cases were male, and median age was 60.5 years (range 47–75 years).…”
