Multiple Unilateral Zosteriform Connective Tissue Nevi on the Trunk

Abstract: Connective tissue nevus is not a true tumor, but rather a hamartoma involving various components of connective tissue. It presents as a slow-growing, painless, flesh-colored, or pink nodule or plaque that is evident from childhood. While any region of the body may be affected, there is a predilection for the trunk and extremities. A 20-month-old girl presented with three ipsilateral confluent popular plaques with zosteriform distribution that had formed over the previous 17 months on the left chest and abdomen… Show more

“…The term connective tissue nevus is referred to a large group of cutaneous hamartomatous lesions characterized by an increased amount or diminution of one of the components of the extracellular matrix, namely collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans . Several distinct forms of connective tissue nevus have been reported in the medical literature over the years and many attempts to properly categorize these lesions have been made too.…”

The most widely used classification system is the one proposed in 1980 by Uitto et al [2][3][4] who divided the connective tissue nevi of the skin into 3 groups according to their predominant dermal component and the presence of specific genetic patterns of inheritance and abnormalities of other organs as well.…”

“…It is characterized by painless, hypochromic, or pinkish papules or nodules of slow growth, which are mostly found on the trunk and limbs, with lesions normally beginning during childhood . Histological features are characterized by an irregular increase of collagen fibers and glycosaminoglycans in the dermis in the absence of fibroblastic proliferation . Some cases show an increase in both collagen and elastic fibers and are called mixed type .…”

“…In linear CTN along Blaschko's lines, the treatment is a challenge due to the size of the lesions. As the lesions remain asymptomatic, with only cosmetic effect, the condition needs no specific treatment, and there are no ideal pre‐established propedeutics for patient follow‐up …”
