Multiple viral hepatitis in injection drug users and associated risk factors

Abstract: Coinfection with hepatic viruses is highly relevant in IDUs, although HAV does not necessarily share the same risk factors relevant for HBV or HCV transmission. The need for outreach vaccination programs is emphasized for HAV and HBV in the target population. Primary prevention should be implemented before initiation or at early stages of a drug career. Epidemiology and transmission of HAV in IDUs requires further research.

“…5,[9][10][11] Injectors are exposed to life-threatening health risks such as drug overdoses, bloodborne viral infections, endocarditis, and others. [12][13][14] Those who remain untreated or who are outside the social and health care system are known to experience higher rates of morbidity and mortality. [15][16][17] Given that abstinence-oriented therapies for opioid addiction have relatively low efficacy, 18 opioid agonist substitution is currently the most effective treatment option.…”

“…HBV/HCV coinfection is not uncommon and it is mostly found in HBV endemic areas such as Asia, the southern parts of the Sahara, and South America (12,13). On the other hand, in areas with HBV infection prevalence less than 1% (such as Northern Europe), HBV/HCV co-infection is very rare (14, 15); however, this condition mostly common among injection drug users, patients with human immunodeficiency virus, and patients who need hemodialysis or blood transfusion (16).…”
