Multiplier Method for Prediction of Adult Height in Patients with Achondroplasia

Abstract: To date, the only way to predict adult height in achondroplastic dwarves has been to consult a growth chart. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the multiplier method of predicting adult height at skeletal maturity in healthy persons can be applied to persons with achondroplasia. Previous studies have shown that the multiplier method can be applied to lower limb length, upper limb length, total height, foot length, and foot height. It is therefore reasonable to suggest that the growth pattern fo… Show more

“…This study confirms that ELL planning should consider, the total height gains desired based on prediction of adult height using the achondroplasia or hypochondroplasia growth charts [21,22,24]. To achieve the desired gain in height, the adolescent-onset strategy should be chosen if the goal is under 30cm.…”

“…The average male height in achondroplasia is 132cm with the low end of height range being 118cm and the high end 146cm [21,22]. The low end of normal height range for a male is 160cm.…”

“…We used the multiplier method described by Paley et al 38 to calculate the overall leg-lengthening required. This method was originally described for predicting the leg-lengthening required in patients with achondroplasia.…”

“…Paley tables were used to predict final height at skeletal maturity. 25 The predicted height was added to the length achieved in the limb to assess final predicted height in those children who had not achieved maturity.…”
