Abstract: Splays—fan‐shaped depositional landforms produced by overbank deposition by unconfined flows—can damage structures, degrade arable land and incur substantial mitigation costs. Splay‐related hazards along many rivers are likely to worsen with the increasing magnitude and frequency of major floods.
