Multistep parametric processes in nonlinear optics

Abstract: We present a comprehensive overview of different types of parametric interactions in nonlinear optics which are associated with simultaneous phase-matching of several optical processes in quadratic nonlinear media, the so-called multistep parametric interactions. We discuss a number of possibilities of double and multiple phase-matching in engineered structures with the sign-varying second-order nonlinear susceptibility, including (i) uniform and non-uniform quasi-phase-matched (QPM) periodic optical superlatt… Show more

“…Cascaded nonlinearities can be modelled by the standard theory of the χ (2) -mediated three-wave mixing described in detail in several books on nonlinear optics (Shen [1984]; Butcher and Cotter [1992]; Boyd [1992]), including more complex multistep parametric processes in quadratic media (Saltiel, Sukhorukov, and Kivshar [2004]). A comprehensive review on optical quadratic solitons was published by Buryak, Di Trapani, Skryabin, and Trillo [2002], and can be also found in a recent book by Kivshar and Agrawal [2003].…”

“…Moreover, it was shown in [45] that such a device of length v is more efficient than three periodic NLPCs (with length of va3 for each period). The ability to shape the spectrum using different motifs can be further extended for cascaded processes [49]. For example, we can consider a third harmonic generation process, consisting of two cascaded processes of second harmonic generation 3 + 3 = 23 and sum frequency generation 3 + 23 = 33.…”

“…Cascaded processes involving successive SHG and sum-frequency generation (SFG) in a single QPM crystal can be used to create THG. [10][11][12][13][14] In practice, in addition to a broad bandwidth, high conversion efficiency is also desired. However, there is a tradeoff between conversion efficiency and bandwidth.…”
