Multiuser Visible Light Communication Systems Using OFDMA

Abstract: Visible light communications (VLC), a short-range optical wireless communication scheme using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as transmitters, has been proposed to support multiple users, predominantly in indoor environments. This paper explores using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) for VLC due to its high spectrum utilization efficiency and potentially high transmission data rate. The proposed optical OFDMA uses adjacent subcarriers as a set to support each user. Doing so allows some users … Show more

“…The demand for wireless communications are growing day by day and currently, most researchers are looking for a new spectrum for wireless communication systems instead of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum as it will be fully occupied by 2035 [1]. Therefore, Visible Light Communications (VLC) research attracts more attention over the last ten years [2], as the visible light spectrum ranges from (4x10 14 ) to (8 x10 14 ) Hz [3], that is ten times wider than the RF spectrum. In VLC, data is transmitted using non-coherent sources at the transmitter such as Light Emitting Diode (LED) due to its high efficiency, low-cost, and easy implementation for frontend devices [4][5][6].…”

“…To accommodate multiple access in VLC systems, multiple techniques have been proposed in the literature, such as OFDM, Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA), and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) [ 17 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. The source allocation for CDMA and PD-NOMA is shown in Figure 2 .…”

“…Research on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can enhance the utilization of the VLC frequency. In [12], orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) was explored for VLC due to its high spectrum utilization efficiency and potentially high transmission data rate. A power line communication-VLC hybrid high data rate transmission approach with discrete wavelet transform (DWT)-based OFDM was designed and proposed for 5G communication systems in [13].…”
