Multiwavelength fiber ring laser based on a semiconductor and fiber gain medium

Abstract: We report a novel multi-wavelength laser source based on hybrid gain medium, with a semiconductor optical amplifier and erbium doped fiber amplifier, and a double-ring structure. More than 60 lines with more than 50 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) have been achieved in our setup. The wavelength interval between the wavelengths is approximately 0.32 nm. The 3 dB spectral width of each lasing line is approximately 0.019 nm. The laser can be tuned from approximately 1526 nm to approximately 1562 nm by adjusting th… Show more

“…The single longitudinal mode (SLM) operation is achieved by using 5mm long SOA. The DI which is fabricated using Si-SiO2 waveguide technology has two arms with a 25 ps time delay between the two arms [6]. The light is split into two beams, and, at the output of DI, two beams of optical signals with the phase difference (corresponding to 25 ps delay) recombine and interfere with each other.…”

“…Multi-wavelength optical source has attracted much attention as one of the key component of DWDM [2]. At present, many kinds of multi-wavelength optical source have been proposed, such as multiwavelength array semiconductor laser [3,4], multi-wavelength erbium-doped lasers [5], and multiwavelength laser based on fiber nonlinear effect [6][7][8][9]. However, the characteristics of these optical sources are to be improved.…”

“…Research on Multi-Wavelength Fiber Lasers (MWFLs) is a topic of contemporary interest due to potential applications in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed (DWDM) optical communication systems besides other attractive applications in areas as diverse as optical fiber sensors, optical metrology, photonics True-Time-Delay (TTD) beam-forming systems, and photonic component characterization [1][2][3][4]. Though there have been various approaches to realize MWFL, all-fiber Q-switched MWFL is an attractive platform for example to study supercontinuum generation and also for terahertz generation.…”
