Municipal solid waste and flooding in Lagos metropolis, Nigeria: Deconstructing the evil nexus

Abstract: Municipal solid waste (MSW) has contributed significantly to flooding in the Lagos metropolis. This study examined the volume of MSW generated using per capita waste generation, projected population, quantity of MSW collected and deposited at six landfills sites from 2007 to 2013. “…Special attention has been paid to the effects of plastic bags of drinking water, which have been suggested as a cause of floods when empty bags accumulate in gutters and drains (Stoler, 2017). For example, in Lagos, Nigeria during the rainy season researchers documented 222 storm drains across the city where localized flooding could be attributed to accumulation of plastic waste (Ojolowo & Wahab, 2017). UN Habitat relatedly collected a series of city case studies documenting the impact of improperly managed solid waste in channels and drains on flooding in several countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America (Espinosa, 2000; Gupta, 2007; UN Habitat, 2010).…”

“…Mismanage waste is detrimental to our environment and all living things. Problems such as pollution (Ferronato and Torretta, 2019), diseases (Boubellouta and Kusch-Brandt, 2021), floods (Ojolowo and Wahab, 2017) and wildfires (Lestari et al , 2022) might result from mismanaged waste. Indonesia was recorded as one of the biggest waste contributors (Priliantini et al , 2020; Yusuf, 2019).…”
