Composite biomass briquette has been synthesized and characterized from a mixture of domestic solid waste and coconut husk using cow dung as a binder. A 170-litre metal drum was used as a kiln for feedstock pyrolysis. The feedstocks were subjected to SEM analysis and proximate analysis. Moreover, an Oxygen Parr Bomb Calorimeter was used to estimate the composite briquette's gross calorific value. Additionally, a LECO 932 CHNS elemental analyzer was utilized to determine the elemental composition of the composite biomass briquette. Subsequently, a Water boiling test was conducted to assess the suitability of the fuel compared to traditional charcoal observing the fuel burning rate, specific fuel consumption, ignition time, and thermal efficiency. The composite biomass briquettes had an optimal high heating value of 19.3 ± 0.1 MJ/kg, ash content of 7.4 ± 0.2%, and 512.03g/ m3 bulk density. The cow dung used as a binder demonstrated excellent lignin composition and adhesive properties. These properties complied with the specifications outlined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM E791-08) Standard. Based on the findings, further research is recommended to focus on gas emission analysis and comprehensive ultimate analysis of composite biomass briquettes.

Solid waste is a problem in almost every country, but developed countries handle and manage their waste efficiently and usefully. On the other hand, developing countries are still struggling to develop an appropriate mechanism for the collection, disposal, and treatment of solid waste. Consequently, poor practices result in the deterioration of water quality. Similarly, the situation is not good in Pakistan; heaps of household garbage on streets and roadsides are very common. In this study, literature from the past 10 years has been collected to evaluate solid waste management practices, composition of waste, and per capita waste generation in different cities of Pakistan. Meanwhile, problems are also highlighted that lead to the pollution of water resources. It has been found that drinking water quality in many cities has already deteriorated due to the seepage of leachate from landfills and dumping sites deep into the soil and making its way to groundwater. Secondly, the disposal of waste into surface water bodies has also created problems. To conclude, despite the presence of local environmental laws, rules, and regulations, an important component of the environment, i.e., water, is getting polluted continuously. Presently, it might not be a worse problem, but in the coming years, it could lead to an environmental and health disaster in Pakistan. It is recommended to adopt healthy and firm waste management practices in Pakistan as being followed by developed nations and, more importantly, strong implementation of laws to contain this major crisis.

PurposeIndia has taken a successful step towards meeting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by providing access to basic amenities such as safe drinking water, waste management, drainage systems and bio-compost pits in households. The purpose of this study is to identify factors that significantly impact access to such basic amenities in villages in two states in the hilly regions of India.Design/methodology/approachVillage-level secondary data collected from the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) website has been analyzed using multiple linear regression and non-parametric statistical tests. Socio-economic and demographic variables are the independent factors in regression whereas availability of basic amenities is the dependent variable.FindingsFindings reveal that in Himachal Pradesh, gender ratio, annual income per family, percentage of BPL households, percentage of pucca houses, and percentage of village population above graduation, significantly impact access to piped water in village households. Also, literacy rate and percentage of population with education above graduation significantly impact availability of compost pits. Further, in Uttarakhand, percentage of pucca houses influences access to waste collection system and availability of compost pits. Availability of drainage systems is influenced by literacy rate. A comparison between the two hilly states reveals that Himachal Pradesh is better off in terms of ease of access to drinking water whereas Uttarakhand is ahead in terms of other amenities.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, no other studies have used socio-economic and demographic variables to study access to basic amenities in villages in hilly states in India.
